Active Listening Social Story SEL Activities Listening Skills Special Education

Description

Teach active listening with a neurodiversity-affirming social story and SEL toolkit featuring listening skills, communication strategies, self-advocacy, and activities for elementary and special education.

✨ COMPLETELY UPDATED! Teach active listening in a way that recognizes that listening does not have to look the same for every child. This research-informed Active Listening Social Story and SEL Activities Toolkit helps children learn how to pay attention to a message, think about what it means, ask for what they need, and respond in a way that works for them.

Instead of teaching active listening through compliance-based expectations such as sitting still or maintaining eye contact, this updated resource focuses on what listening is really for: learning, understanding, communicating, and connecting with others.

---

Children learn the simple, memorable:

READY → LISTEN → THINK → RESPOND

framework and practice using it at school, at home, with friends, and in their community. The resource also recognizes that children listen and communicate in different ways. Some children may look toward a speaker, while others look nearby. Some may sit still, while others focus better when they move or use a quiet tool. The goal is not to make every child look like they are listening—the goal is to help children discover strategies that help them receive, understand, and respond to a message successfully.

This makes the resource especially supportive for neurodivergent learners, students with autism or ADHD, special education settings, and children with different communication, sensory, attention, and processing needs—while still providing practical active listening instruction for every learner.

💛 A MORE INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO ACTIVE LISTENING

This updated resource moves away from the idea that active listening has one “correct” look.

Children are not required to make eye contact, sit perfectly still, or demonstrate attention in exactly the same way as their peers. Instead, they are encouraged to identify what helps their brain and body receive and understand a message.

Children also learn powerful self-advocacy language such as:

“Can you say that again?”

“What does that mean?”

“Can you show me?”

“I need a little more time to think.”

These are not signs that a child failed to listen. They are important communication skills that help children become more independent, confident learners and communicators.

Active listening is more than looking like you’re listening. It is learning how to receive a message, understand it, think about it, and respond.
