As a primary educator, the month of March is a difficult month to get through without at least one or two children trying to convince the class with every once of their being, that they just saw a leprechaun running down the hallway…or hiding in the restroom…or peeking through the window….
Wouldn’t it be nice to continue having that much enthusiasm and positivity throughout our adult years? Kids are the best!
Here are a few of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day crafts and writing activities to do with my students during this exciting month!
Lucky Leprechaun Rocks
I love painting river rocks for my students and hiding them around the classroom for them to find…you know…as gifts left behind by the leprechaun. 😉 I like these sooo much better than using those plastic gold coins that kids will end up throwing away, or chocolate coins (which some students can’t have because of dietary issues). They treasure these stones, and most of them keep these in their desks or backpacks or lockers the rest of the school year for good luck!
I usually leave a note from the leprechaun somewhere in the room stating something like this:
I just use paint pens to decorate the rocks. I spray them with acrylic sealer to make them more durable, but that is completely optional. You can watch the video below to see the process. You can find all the supplies to make the rocks HERE. (*this is an Amazon Affiliate link.)
Shamrock and Rainbow Craft and Lucky Writing Activity
This craft is so colorful and fun and the kids love layering the rainbow and building the 3-dimensional shamrock! I really like how the writing prompts get them thinking outside of the box. There are four different prompts and they all center around luck and wishes.
I honestly cannot get enough of these ADORABLE leprechaun faces, and when there is a whole classroom display of them….CUTENESS OVERLOAD! The craft is really easy. I always give the students their choice of skin color and hair color, and the kids love the writing activity because they get to try their hand at poetry by “writing” a poem all about things that are green. We brainstorm things that are green together first, and then the students write from the perspective of the leprechaun that they just created. What would his favorite green things be? So much fun! You can watch the assembly video below. You can get the directions and patterns HERE.
Rainbow Windcatcher Craft
This is such an easy craft to make and the kids LOVE to watch them spin!!! These work best if you use cardstock instead of construction paper, and they look absolutely ADORABLE hanging from the ceiling all around the room! You can watch the video below to see the process in making these. You can get the directions and patterns HERE.
